Spring has arrived and ushered in a spirit of new beginnings. This month, we want to take some time to pour into you and remind you of the endless possibilities that lie ahead. Matthew 17:20 reads, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

This scripture illustrates how even the smallest step forward can create powerful momentum. Oftentimes, we feel pressure from ourselves or others to have everything figured out, when instead, we should focus on just starting. Always remember that even the smallest amount of belief, effort, or courage can lead to amazing results.

Just like a mustard seed expands into something much larger, small steps—when taken consistently—build upon one another. What once seemed insignificant can transform into something strong, unshakable, and ultimately life-changing.

As the first quarter of the year comes to a close, we want you to remember that change happens through small, steady steps. We encourage you to take that step, believe in your potential, and move forward with faith. This March, we want you to go ahead and plant your mustard seed, and see where this spring takes you.

It’s February, and that means that Black History Month is upon us! We want to take a moment to honor and uplift our rich legacy. Spike Lee’s groundbreaking film, School Daze, premiered in 1988 and instantly became a cultural milestone that continues to inspire us and allows us to reflect on themes of identity, community, and empowerment.

One of the most striking elements of the film is its visual storytelling, brought to life through the iconic costume design of Ruth E. Carter. Before becoming an Academy Award-winning designer for her work on films like Black Panther, Carter showcased her brilliance in School Daze. An esteemed woman of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Carter also made history by becoming the first Black woman to win two Oscars. From the bold hues of fraternity and sorority attire to the intricate details of the accessories, her designs in the film showcased cultural pride and created a vibrant and unforgettable visual narrative.

As we enter Black History Month, we’re drawing inspiration from the messaging and artistry of School Daze. This month’s theme—“Black Excellence Through Unity”—resonates deeply with the film’s message of fostering community while celebrating the beauty of our differences. Spike Lee’s story also reminds us that within our diversity lies our greatest strength. Furthermore, Carter’s costumes emphasize the power of fashion as a statement of identity and pride.

This month’s Ivy Box will have you celebrating the beauty of our Blackness with two items inspired by the costuming in School Daze. We live in a world that constantly celebrates the grind. Oftentimes we’re working long hours, managing countless responsibilities, and yet still somehow this feeling persists that tells us we need to be doing even more. So, this November we want to remind you that sleep is not a luxury; it’s a necessity.

Firstly, we’re going to challenge you to reframe the way you think about rest. There is a prevalent myth that says that success is achieved by constantly sacrificing rest for work. But, this isn’t the full truth. Research has shown that adequate sleep not only boosts productivity, but it also enhances creativity, and aids in decision-making. As the nation gears up for what is shaping up to be one of the most historical elections, it comes as no surprise that the women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated are once again at the forefront. Whether it be donating $19.08 to a candidate, volunteering as a poll worker, or hosting voter registration drives, AKAs have been energized, enthused, and committed to ensuring that every voice is heard.

Know that when you stroll to the polls, you are not going alone. You are there with 360,000 phenomenal women of pink and green. Moreover, you are standing on the shoulders of women who have committed themselves to civic engagement and social justice for over a century and counting. This legacy is truly unmatched, and we are so proud of you for being an integral member of this sisterhood.

This election has also shown the world the collective power of the Divine Nine, as all organizations have banded together to create an extensive, coordinated voter campaign. These massive voter mobilization efforts have proven once again that Alpha Kappa Alpha women are not just participants in history, but makers of it.
