Sonya M. Sloan, M.D. has forged her way to the top of the male-dominated field of orthopedic surgery. Also known as #OrthoDoc, she is the author of The Rules of Medicine: A Medical Professional’s Guide to Success, which is an Amazon #1 Best Seller in Medical Education and Training and the Top 100 Amazon books by physicians in 2020.
Dr. Sloan travels the country spreading the impact of her unique approach to patient care, a combination of her love for science and passion for helping others. She earned a B.S. in Chemistry from Texas Tech University and an M.D. from the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB).
Dr. Sloan completed her residency at Baylor College of Medicine where she made history as both the first African American female Intern in General Surgery and the first African American female Orthopedic Surgery resident. She has authored and published research projects in Orthopedic Surgery and a joint venture with NASA, Johnson Space Center.
Dr. Sloan’s generous philanthropy has reached countless individuals within her community and around the globe. She has established two specifically purposed non-profit organizations. ME&WE, Inc. (Motivating & Empowering Women to Excel) collectively reaches over 5,000 women daily. SLOAN STEM+Arts is an educational diversity initiative with a sole purpose is to increase the number of minority students in STEM career tracks.
Dr. Sloan currently serves on several Board of Trustees including, Black Women Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Institute of Spirituality and Health, RoweDocs Telemedicine, and Tristar Global Medical Inc. She is a consultant, blogger, and speaker for CompHealth and DairyMax, a national partner to the NFL and Fuel Up to Play 60 initiative, which promotes proper youth daily nutrition. She helped to launch a telemedicine company as the Virtual OrthoDoc, one of the first of its kind in telehealth and orthopedics.
In 2016, Dr. Sloan was chosen as the TEDMED Front Line Scholars. Additionally, she has been listed as one of the “Top 25 Women in Houston,” and has been featured in Essence Magazine and several national publications. She is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
